Halloween Donuts

It’s Saturday the 13th and for this week’s Baked with Scare Saturday, we’re making a trio of showstopping Halloween donuts… from scratch! ðŸ˜±

Base Vanilla Cake Donut Ingredients
  • 1 3/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup water

Pumpkin Spice Donut Ingredients

  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp ground cloves

Pumpkin Spice Donut Toppings

  • Powdered sugar
  • Caramel almond creamer
  • Fall sprinkles

Blueberry Lemon Spiderweb Donut Ingredients

  • Blueberry puree
  • Lemon zest

Blueberry Lemon Spiderweb Donut Toppings

  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 1 cup fresh blueberries
  • Fresh lemon juice
  • Powdered sugar
  • Lime green candy melts

Monster Donut Toppings

  • Powdered Sugar
  • Lime green food coloring
  • Vanilla almond creamer
  • 1/8 tsp almond extract
  • Eyeball candies


  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F.
  2. To start with the vanilla base donuts, mix together the flour, sugar, salt, baking powder and baking soda in a large bowl. Use a whisk to make sure everything is combined.
    1. To make the pumpkin spice donuts, add the dry spices into the flour mixture and combine thoroughly.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix together the egg, buttermilk, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, and water.
  4. Mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients.
    1. To make the blueberry lemon donuts, add a swirl of the blueberry puree and lemon zest into the batter.
  5. Spray each cavity on a donut pan with non-stick cooking spray. Fill a piping bag with the donut batter and pipe into the pans, filling each cavity about halfway.
  6. Bake about 10-12 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into each one comes out clean.
  7. Once finished baking, allow to cool in the pan for a few minutes before removing the donuts to a cooling rack. Allow to cool completely before decorating.
    1. To decorate the Pumpkin Spice Donuts:
      1. First make the caramel glaze by mixing caramel almond creamer into powdered sugar by the teaspoonful until a thick glaze forms.
      2. Dip the donuts into the glaze and allow excess to run off.
      3. Before it sets, dip the donuts into a bowl of sprinkles and swirl around to cover completely.
      4. Return to the cooling rack to let the sprinkles set.
    2. To decorate the Blueberry Lemon Spiderweb Donuts:
      1. First melt the lime green candy melts and pipe into spiderwebs to be placed on top of the finished donuts. It may help to pipe onto parchment paper with circles drawn on the underside in the size of the donut pan cavities to ensure that your spiderwebs will be the right size. Allow the spiderwebs to set completely – they will be very fragile!
      2. Next, you’ll want to make a blueberry puree by putting the fresh blueberries, sugar, and water in a small pot on a stovetop and cooking over medium heat. Bring to a boil then reduce to a simmer for about 10 minutes.
      3. Remove from heat once all of the blueberries have burst and allow to cool for 2-5 minutes before pouring into a blender and pureeing until smooth.
      4. Strain the puree into a bowl if necessary and add powdered sugar until the desired glaze consistency is reached.
      5. Dip into the blueberry glaze and allow any excess to run off. Return to the cooling rack and allow to set.
      6. Carefully place the piped spiderwebs on top of each donut.
    3. To decorate the Monster Donuts:
      1. Make the glaze by adding the almond extract, lime green food coloring, and vanilla almond creamer into the powdered sugar until a thick glaze forms.
      2. Dip the donuts into the glaze and allow any excess to run off. A second dipping may be needed to ensure that the glaze has an opaque look to it once its finished.
      3. Before the last coating of glaze fully sets, place the eyeball candies onto the donuts so that they dry in place.
  8. Get yourself a nice cup of your preferred drink to go with donuts (milk, coffee, etc) and enjoy!

Okay, I know there was a lot to take in there, between each type of donuts’ ingredients and toppings, but trust me when I tell you this recipe is super doable once you start getting into it and taking one step at a time! Making these donuts for the blog was the first time I’ve ever made donuts and I was thrilled with how well they turned out!

In the interest of saving on both time and funding, I made one batch of the base vanilla donut batter and divided that into thirds, adding the pumpkin spices and blueberry lemon ingredients to two of them respectively. (I kept the Monster Donuts the base vanilla flavor.) This was a pretty easy way to get a variety of flavors without having to make three dozen donuts (though I’m sure I could have found plenty of taste testers if I’d decided to go that route!). Note that the more you transfer and work with the batter, the stickier it gets though I didn’t notice any difference in the final consistency of each one.

Now for the decorating… I know the steps outlined above are pretty involved, but once you get into them, they go quickly and OHMYGOSH the results are so awesome!! You’ll definitely use more sprinkles on the Pumpkin Spice ones than you think you’re going to, so have plenty on hand. Also, piping candy melts can take some practice, but once you get it down, there’s no limit to the things you can create! Finally, I used eyeball candies for the Monster Donuts, but the next time I make them, will probably pipe out small eyeballs with black and white candy melts since the eyeball candies were a little harder than I was expecting – and I don’t want anyone cracking their teeth on them! Piping little eyes like these with melts is super easy, it’ll just take a little bit more time.
