Celebrating Halloween 2020

This has been a Halloween season unlike any other, and today we wanted to share some of the ways we’ve kept the spirit alive to celebrate Halloween 2020!

If you didn’t know, we’re a part of a group of likeminded Halloween and horror bloggers, vloggers, and content creators called The Samhain Society – and we kicked off the Halloween 2020 season with the release of The Samhain Society’s Halloween Zine! Our digital zine is available for free and full of Halloween spirit from some of our favorite spooky friends. And best of all, there’s still plenty of time before Halloween for you to get your copy here!

Like so many other things this year, we moved to a virtual space for a lot of our Halloween celebrations as the season got underway. From appearing as guests on our friend Miranda from Spooky Little Halloween’s Instagram Live series (where we worked on our DIY Spooky Terrarium!) to painting along with Tara from Shrieks & Eeks, we participated in quite a few activities with the online Halloween community this year, and had SUCH a blast with everyone! And luckily the fun’s not over yet – Miranda’s hosting another Spooky Slumber Party on Instagram Live tomorrow night to kickoff Halloween 2020, and we’ll be popping in for a quick hello… and maybe another bedtime story. Be sure you’re following along on Instagram so you don’t miss a spooky moment!

One tradition that we were able to uphold this year was visiting a pumpkin patch! Fortunately, we live very close to a farm that has a lot of space and outdoor area (and the cutest market with fresh produce!), so we were able to go and pick out a few pumpkins of our own – all while maintaining safe social distance. What made this year‘s trip extra special though, was that Miranda (from Spooky Little Halloween) was passing through town, so we were able to go together! We had so much fun wandering the patch and picking pumpkins – it was a perfect fall day!

Another tradition we were still able to participate in this year was our annual Project Fallcraft – though modified for 2020, of course. Rather than a full weekend day, we got together for a carefully distanced and abbreviated crafting evening during the week which was still a ton of fun! We listened to some spooky tunes and got to flex our creative prowess, which is always a good time.

halloween cards

We were also able to keep the spooky spirit alive all season by once again participating in a few Halloween card exchanges with some folks in the online Halloween community! There’s just something so fun about getting little bits of Halloween cheer in the mail. It seems like Halloween cards are getting more and more popular each year – and we love it! If this sounds like something you want to get in on next year, start keeping an eye on Halloween blogs and Instagram pages in early to mid-August as that’s when most creators start announcing their card exchanges. Sign ups are usually limited and run out quickly, so don’t push it off if this is something you’re wanting to do. And don’t forget, we’ve got a bunch of tips for making DIY cards from last year if you want to go the handmade route!

And finally, we really took some time to enjoy the smaller moments this Halloween season. Since we weren’t able to do some of the things we usually do in October (i.e. Fright Fest, going to the movies, etc), we decided to really appreciate what we could still do. From keeping up with our favorite fall shows (Halloween Baking Championship, et all) to finally watching some older movies we’d been meaning to get around to for years (like the original House on Haunted Hill, which is definitely worth your time, and the original 13 Ghosts, which is… not.), and even just driving around looking at Halloween lights and decorations, I feel like we were able to make the most of this Halloween season despite the challenges this year has thrown at us all.

How about you? How have you celebrated Halloween 2020? Were you still able to participate in some of your favorite traditions, or did you start new ones entirely? Let us know! We always love to hear how others in the community celebrate our favorite day. And, of course, stay tuned to the blog – we’re only hours away from Halloween 2020 and there’s a few more posts coming your way before the year is through!
